Edward Abratowski, MD

Dr. Abratowski grew up in the Detroit area and did his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan in physics. He completed his Masters in Materials Science & Engineering at Stanford University and worked in technology development at Intel in Silicon Valley and Oregon before starting medical school at Oregon Health & Sciences University in 1998.

He moved on to New York City for his residency in internal medicine at Mt. Sinai, and has been practicing hospital medicine at Mills-Peninsula since graduating in 2005.

Dr. Abratowski lives in San Francisco with his cat where he is a member of the San Francisco Film Society and the Museum of Modern Art. He enjoys traveling and is learning Spanish.

Shital Aggarwal, MD

Dr. Aggarwal grew up in India and attended Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical School. She moved to the United States (Maine) in 1999 after getting married, and completed her Internship and residency at John H Jr. Stroger of Cook County Hospital. 

 

Dr. Aggarwal, along with her family, settled into the Bay Area in 2004. She initially worked at San Mateo Medical Center Long Term Care. Since 2006 she has been practicing as hospitalist at Mills Peninsula hospital. She became certified in Palliative Medicine and Hospice in 2012. 

 

Dr. Aggarwal’s goal is to practice humanistic, personal, evidence-based medicine and approach patient care with an open heart and mind.

 

In her free time Dr. Aggarwal enjoys traveling, cooking and spending time with family.

Harsha Alexander, MD

Dr. Alexander is from Houston, Texas. She moved out of the big world of Texas after completing her undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Houston and then Medical school at Texas Tech University. She completed Internal Medicine training at Cleveland Clinic Foundation Main Campus, where she was enrolled in the Hospitalist Track Program with particular focus on various principles important in Inpatient Medicine like Quality Improvement, Patient Safety etc. 

 

She has also been influenced by various experiences like her childhood years in Kerala, India (known as God’s own country for its natural beauty and religious tolerance), managing her family business, travelling through Europe as well as Medical volunteering in rural Nigeria and India. 

 

She lives in San Mateo with her husband and enjoys travelling, hiking, learning new things and spending time with family and friends.

Naina Bhalla, MD

Dr. Bhalla grew up in New York, close to the ocean and Manhattan. She received a B.A. from New York University and completed Medical School at Howard University’s Medical College in Washington D.C. After working in Los Angeles at a free medical clinic for 2 years with VISTA Americorps, she completed a residency in Internal Medicine & Pediatrics at UICMC in Chicago, IL. She loved the winters so much, she stayed on to complete a fellowship in International Emergency Medicine and an MPH.

Before joining PHA and moving to the bay area, she worked with the humanitarian medical NGO Doctors without Borders in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo (Brazzaville), Madagascar, and Jordan (Amman).

Sami Bogale, MD

Dr. Bogale entered medical school right after finishing high school. He studied at Gondar College of Medical Sciences, Ethiopia and graduated with Honors. He won a fully paid scholarship to study Tropical Ophthalmology at University College London, England. After just taking a short certificate course in tropical ophthalmology, he moved to the USA and did his internship in internal medicine at Northshore University Hospital in New York, then transferred to UCSF Fresno to finish his residency training. Since finishing residency in 2004, he has been working as a nocturnist hospitalist at Mills-Peninsula Hospital.

Dr. Bogale is recently married and enjoys traveling, spending time with his big family and driving out of town on his days off.

Bhavna Kasturia, MD

Dr. Kasturia graduated in the top 8th percentile of her medical class and has extensive expertise in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She completed one year of internship in General Surgery at Cornell University before pursuing her true passion in Internal Medicine and completed her residency at Drexel University in Pennsylvania.  Dr. Kasturia is proficient in critical care management.  She has worked as a hospitalist at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco before joining Peninsula Hospitalist Associates where she now is an integral member of Mills Peninsula Medical Center providing care to her many patients. 

Outside of work, Dr. Kasturia enjoys spending time with her beautiful family of four and currently lives in Foster City.

Michele Lee, MD

Dr. Lee is a native San Franciscan. She completed her undergraduate degree at Amherst College, then spent 2 years as a clinical researcher and as an Americorps volunteer in community health. She went on to study medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and completed her internship and residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston. She joined Peninsula Hospitalists Associates in 2013

David Liao, MD

Dr. Liao was born in Dallas, TX and is a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan. He grew up and went to school in Southern California attending UCLA Med School and graduating Class of 2001. He is relatively new to the Bay Area having just moved here in 2014. He enjoys golfing, skiing, tennis, working out at the gym and is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

Richard Liu, DO

Dr. Liu grew up in the bay area next door to Apple computers and Steve Jobs. He went to undergrad at UCSD before heading to the midwest for medical school at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.

After completing medical school, he served as a flight surgeon in the US Navy. When he wasn't seeing patients in clinic, he was performing homeland security patrols with the Coast Guard in the skies over Chicago.

Upon the completion of his time in the Navy, Richard then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. He then became the chief resident before coming to Peninsula Hospital in 2009 to practice hospital medicine.

Dr. Liu currently works full-time as a hospitalist and part time in Medical informatics where he works on improving the electronic health record system utilized by Sutter Health.

 

In his free time, he enjoys spending time exploring the city with his wife.

Trushna Patel, MD

Dr. Patel grew up in Kenya and completed undergraduate and medical school at Cardiff University in the UK. She moved to the USA 11 years ago and did her internal medicine training at LAC + USC medical center in Los Angeles. She enjoys being a Hospitalist but when time permits she also keeps her outpatient skills up to date

She lives with her husband and precious dog and loves traveling. She is also interested in outdoor activities with her most recent achievement of climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.

Alpa Vora, MD

Dr. Vora grew up in India and completed her medical school from D Y Patil Medical college in Mumbai. She went on to work as a primary care physician for a year in a rural India. Following this, she completed residency in anesthesiology and Critical Care in Mumbai, India, graduating with Honors.

She moved to US (San Diego) in 2008, after getting married, and completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine from Saint Francis hospital in Evanston, Illinois in 2013.

She moved to the bay area along with her husband in 2015 and has been working as hospitalist with PHA since. Prior to this, she was working as a hospitalist in San Diego.

In her spare time, she loves to travel, cook, swim and bike the beautiful trails in the bay area.

Matthew Yee, MD

Dr. Yee was born and raised in San Francisco. He completed his undergraduate work at UC Davis in biomedical engineering where he also spent time doing research in biomechanics and bioimaging. He attended medical school in Ohio at the University Of Toledo College Of Medicine. He was drawn back to the Bay Area after medical school and completed his residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. On his days off he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, discovering new eateries, playing basketball and rooting for the hometown Warriors.

Kelly Lo, MD

Dr. Lo was born in Hong Kong and came to Southern California at age 10, where she grew up in Arcadia (a city of wandering peacocks!). After getting her BS in biology from University of California, San Diego, she took a year off to do research in Germany and study art history before starting medical school at University of Pittsburgh. Being a Cali girl at heart, she came running back to California for her internal medicine residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. After residency, she worked for 2 years at Cedars Sinai Medical Center as a hospitalist before joining PHA. During her free time, she likes to travel, paint, go to museums and explore new restaurants and cafes.

Sweta Bodepudi, MD

Dr. Bodepudi grew up in the East Bay. She completed her undergraduate work at UC Berkeley and medical school at Boston University School of Medicine. She came sprinting back to warm weather and finished her residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. 

In her spare time, she enjoys landscape photography, hiking, dining, painting, game nights and traveling.

Lori Bruland, MD

Dr. Lori Bruland was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest and later in her childhood moved to Redding, California. As an undergraduate, she attended UC Davis where she studied neurobiology (go Aggies!) and worked full time as an MCAT teacher and organic chemistry tutor. She then went on to Saint Louis University School of Medicine where she earned both her M.D. and M.B.A., and also served as her medical school class Co-President. Afterwards, she returned to Central California to complete her residency training at the UC Davis Mercy Merced Residency Program.

Dr. Bruland moved to the Bay Area shortly after completing residency. She enjoys nocturnist medicine given its many unique opportunities and challenges. She has worked with PHA since 2018.

Dr. Bruland currently lives in San Francisco and loves the city life (though traffic is not her favorite). In her free time, she enjoys hiking, cooking, traveling, Fantasy Football, and spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Justin Yu, MD

Dr. Yu grew up in San Francisco. He completed his undergraduate work at UC Davis, majoring in Neurobiology & Physiology. He attended medical school at Saint Louis University. He returned to San Francisco to complete his residency at California Pacific Medical Center. He previously worked as a hospitalist at the CPMC Mission Bernal Campus before joining Peninsula Hospitalist Associates in 2020.

In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and rooting for the Giants, Niners and Warriors.

Jennifer Funk, MD

Kevin Yuen, MD

Dr. Yuen was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. He obtained his BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology and MPH from UC Berkeley. He returned to Honolulu for medical school at the University of Hawaii, and came back to the Bay Area for residency at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He worked as a hospitalist for 5 years at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley prior to joining PHA. In his free time, he enjoys watching Jeopardy!, watching sports (especially the NBA), reading, cooking, exploring Bay Area restaurants, exercising, and spending time with friends and family.

Aileen Nguyen, MD

Dr. Aileen Nguyen was born and raised in San Jose. Her family moved to Houston, Texas for a few years where she attended high school and then moved back to California for college to attend the University of California, Los Angeles where she received a BS in biology. She attended medical school at Ross University in Dominica and completed her internal medicine residency at St. Mary’s Medical Center in San Francisco. During her free time, she enjoys going to live music shows, exploring new neighborhoods, trying out new restaurants, and spending time outdoors.

Rachit Anand, DO

Dr. Anand was born and raised in the Bay Area. He grew up in the South Bay and the East Bay and completed his undergraduate degree in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior at UC Davis. He attended medical school at Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco. He always had interests in hospital medicine which led him to PHA and he loves being a Bay Area physician through and through and serving his region.
